Evan Venegas was born in 1975 and raised in Queens, New York. Born into a family with artistic heritage, his father being a respected Latin Jazz musician and his brother a successful music producer.

Evan began painting with oils at a young age. In his early teens he started developing his technique of realistic rendering of imaginative objects. He began his education at Parsons School of Design in New York.

After spending the first 20 years of his life in New York City. Evan was attracted to the seemingly open minded West Coast. He moved to San Francisco to study painting at the San Francisco Art Institute where the artist received his BFA.

Evan considers his paintings to be “playgrounds for the mind.” On the surface, his work can be appreciated in an orchestral sense for both palette and composition. In much the same way expressionist painters of the early century were influenced by jazz music, Evan is influenced by modern day electronic music.

Whilst his work speaks for the pulse or beat of an urban existence and the rhythms of life, he welcomes other interpretations of his work and hopes to portray pictures which convey not an exclusive interpretation but rather a visual language that is more universal and encompassing.

I look deep into the evolution of city life. I am inspired by the energy created by the masses of people and how weaved together we form a changing backdrop for city living.

I am also inspired by the shapes I see which are sharp, curved, bold, delicate and combine into an infinite number of both simple and complex configurations.

When I paint I start with a blank canvas and let each shape evolve out of the beginning point. The process is a stream of consciousness that is inspired by urban aesthetics.

This process has evolved into a symbolism that I continue to uncover. I recognized the distinction between anthropomorphic shapes and those that have a manufactured quality

I fuse these two classes of shapes in my painting as symbolism of what happens daily in the urban environment.
